Vanderbilt bites Gators on Saturday

NASHVILLE, Tenn.-Vanderbilt survived a 50-point night from Florida's starting backcourt by placing four players in double-figure scoring, as the Commodores won their Southeastern Conference opener over the Gators 95-87 at Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday.

A crowd of 13,327 braved sub-freezing temperatures and falling snow, and were rewarded with one of VU's best performances of the year. Vandy's A.J. Ogilvy scored 24, and teammates Jermaine Beal (22 points), Jeff Taylor (14) and John Jenkins (13) also added double figures.

Vanderbilt trailed by two at half, but out-scored the Gators 53-43 in the second half, with 16 points coming from Ogilvy. VU shot 52.5 percent from the field in the game and handed out 17 assists against only seven turnovers against a Florida team that pressed for most of the day.

UF freshman Kenny Boynton (28 points) and sophomore Erving Walker (22) were a two-man wrecking crew for the Gators, who came in hitting just 29.3 of their 3-point attempts, but torched the nets for 48.1 percent (13-of-27) on Saturday.
