Vandy edges Governors in 11th

NASHVILLE, Tenn.-Vanderbilt's Andrew Giobbi singled in Brian Johns with two outs in the 11th inning, giving the Commodores a 2-1 victory over visiting Austin Peay at Hawkins Field.

Five VU hurlers combined to strike out 13 Governors and limit APSU to just six hits and one walk. Russell Brewer pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing one hit, no walks and no runs while striking out three to record his first win of the season.

VU's pitching kept the Governors at bay until Giobbi laced a single through the right side of the infield off closer Zach Gerler, scoring Johns (who led off with a walk) easily from second. The win improved VU to 4-0 on the season.

"[Gerler] threw a first-pitch slider. I thought he was going to come back with another one. He threw a fastball, and left it over the plate," Giobbi said.

The fourth win wasn't as easy as the first three; the Commodores won three games over Niagara by a combined score of 46-5 over the weekend.

"After playing three non-competitive games this weekend, it's nice to get in and play against a Regional-caliber team like Austin Peay" Giobbi said.
