Vanderbilt lands two targets
Vanderbilt's first official visit weekend produced the first two public commitments for new head coach James Franklin, VandySports.com has learned.
Three-star tight end Steven Scheu of Evansville (Ind.). The 6-foot-6, 240-pound target confirmed his decision with VS through text message a few moments ago.
The Reitz Memorial standout played multiple positions for the including tight end, running back and long snapper. The versatile athlete was one of the top tight end prospects to perform at Vanderbilt during the summer camp period. Vanderbilt offered Scheu while on his official visit this weekend and he commits over other offers from Kansas, Miami of Ohio, Western Michigan and others.
Scheu received Class 3A All-State honors his senior year while catching 33 passes for 378 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for three more. Scheu caught 43 passes for 724 yards and 10 touchdowns as a junior in 2009.
Vanderbilt also received a verbal commitment from three-star athlete Jacquese Kirk of Jasper (Ala.). The versatile corner-receiver prospect had been a soft commitment to Louisville, but changed his mind following this weekends visit to Vanderbilt. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound represented Alabama in the annual Alabama vs. Mississppi All-Star Classic after a standout career at Walker High.
A target for the Commodores throughout his recruitment, Kirk could play both ways for Vanderbilt due to his tremendous skill set and explosive, play-making ability.
Rated as the nation's 55th best corner by Rivals.com, Kirk registered over 50 tackles and picked off a couple of passes while earning All-State honors for the third straight season in 2010. He also posted over 400 receiving yards. He was also an exceptional performer in the return game.
Kirk hauled 14 interceptions during the last three seasons at Walker High.
VandySports.com plans to have follow up stories with both prospects in the near future.
