About Wake Forest
Coach Jim Grobe's program slipped a bit recently from the 11-3, 9-4, and 8-5 campaigns to which he led Wake Forest from 2006-2008, as the Demon Deacons went 5-7 and 3-9 the last two season. But Wake thumped Maryland 31-10 last weekend to snap a three-game losing streak, and more importantly, get bowl-eligible for the first time in three years.
Grobe, in his 11th year at Wake, now has a career record of 68-65 there. The interesting thing about Grobe's run of success is how he's done it: the Demon Deacons have given up more total yards to their opponents than they gained in five of the last eight seasons (including the 11-win 2006 season) and were dead-even in 2007.
So how did Grobe do it, and how did it then fall apart? Wake went plus-13, plus-9, and plus-17 in turnover margin from '06 to '08, but the last two ended at minus-4 and zero in 2009 and 2010, respectively.
