Banged-up Commodores rout Monmouth on Sunday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Philip Pfeifer pitched six innings, struck out six, and gave up just one unearned run, as Vanderbilt took advantage of some awful defense by Monmouth to get more than enough runs in a 13-1 win at Hawkins Field on Sunday.

Pfeifer allowed just one walk between innings three and six, and gave way to Carson Fulmer, Jared Miller and Brian Miller, who held the Hawks scoreless from there as the second-ranked Commodores improved to 7-1 on the season.

Vincent Conde and Kyle Smith each had two hits for VU, with Smith's accounting for four RBIs. Second baseman Tony Kemp had a hit and two walks, and scored four times, and Jack Lupo reached base three times and scored twice.

The Commodores managed just 10 hits, but stole six bases in six tries, and scored runs in all but the second and fourth innings.
