September 28, 2013NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Austyn Carta-Samuels hit 23-of-29 passes for 334 yards and two scores and added another on the ground, and Jerron Seymour tallied 152 yards of total offense and two scores, as Vanderbilt routed UAB, 52-24, at Dudley Field on Saturday night.
Vandy got the game's first score, led 24-6 at the break, and the Blazers never really threatened from halftime on. UAB's Darius Powell scored on a 29-yard reception with 12:48 left in the game to cut the Vandy lead to 38-17, and the Blazers recovered an onside kick, but the Vandy defense stiffened and the 'Dores added scores on their next two possessions to put the game out of reach.
With 5:45 left in the first quarter Seymour weaved his way through traffic for a 7-yard touchdown run, giving VU a 7-0 lead.
Ty Long drilled a 33-yard field goal with 1:47 left in the first quarter to bring UAB closer.
Carey Spear drilled a 50-yard field goal by plenty in the second quarter to put VU up, 10-3.
Long connected on a 20-yard field goal with 9:23 left before half, cutting Vandy's lead to four.
But Seymour sprinted 58 yards untouched out of the wildcat formation on VU's next snap, as te Commodores went back up by 11.
Carta-Samuels snuck in from a half-yard over with five seconds left in the first half, putting VU up 24-6 at the break after Spear's PAT.
The Blazers picked Carta-Samuels on the first drive of the second half and returned it to the VU 31, but the Commodores held UAB to another Long field goal, this one 37 yards with 9:19 left in the third.
Wesley Tate's 8-yard touchdown run with 2:54 left in the third helped push the Vandy lead to 31-9.
Carta-Samuels had fourth-quarter scoring tosses to Jordan Matthews and Fitz Lassing, and backup quarterback Patton Robinette added an 8-yard scoring run with 5:55 left.
In between, Powell had a terrific 29-yard scoring reception in the front of the end zone. With 1:08 left, Jamari Staples caught a 17-yard pass from Jonathan Perry for the final score.
