Vandy slips by Austin Peay, 58-56
NASHVILLE, Tenn -- Vanderbilt's Damian Jones had 12 points, helping the Commodores edge Austin Peay by a 58-56 final at Memorial Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.
The visiting Governors had tied the game with under three minutes left, when Vandy's Kyle Fuller picked up a steal, and later, converted a lay-up in the half-court offense with 2:11 left.
That put VU up for good, but Vandy could never breathe until the buzzer sounded. APSU's Travis Betran banked in a crazy 3 from about 30 feet with under 10 seconds left, and when Fuller missed one of the ensuing two free throws on the next possession, the Governors, down two, had a chance.
Betran got the ball on the left wing and threw up an ill-advised mid-range jumper, Chris Horton missed a follow-up and Jones secured the rebound as the final horn sounded.
It was the second-straight home game in which the 'Dores have had to sweat out a last-second shot, following the Dec. 5 win over Marshall which ended in similar fashion.
Vandy shot just 37.3 percent for the game and had 19 turnovers, but held the Governors to 34.3 percent from the field. The Commodores improve to 6-3, while APSU dropped to 5-6.
