VU takes care of business (and more) vs. Carolina

There was a short list of things Vanderbilt needed to do to beat South Carolina, and the Commodores put check marks in the correct column in each of them in a 78-60 victory over the Gamecocks on Saturday.

And then some.

The first order of business was to slow down point guard Bruce Ellington, whose hot hand killed the 'Dores in Carolina's 83-75 victory over Columbia last month.

Done. A fantastic effort by Jeffery Taylor, which VU coach Kevin Stallings called "the key to the game, was primarily responsible for Ellington's off-day.

After hitting five second-half 3-pointers in Columbia as part of a 22-point effort that was critical in the previous game, Ellington-who may be generously listed at 5-foot-9-had an awful time getting shots over the 6-foot-7 Taylor.

The result was a 4-of-17 shooting day, as the point guard played 36 minutes and added just one assist, to boot.

"Jeff [Taylor] is our best defender… We can't always put him on their best guy because of other variables, but we were able to today and I thought he was fantastic," Stallings said.
