Team plays hours after top recruit takes own life
It took Vanderbilt all of about 20 minutes to do away with visiting Tennessee-Martin tonight.
But the focus was as much on the news outside the lines as within them.
The Commodores batted around in the bottom of the first inning, making it look easy as they plated eight runs and sent 12 men to the plate. And on defense, Sam Selman used a low-90s fast ball to throw a no-hitter until he was relieved by freshman Adam Ravenelle in the sixth.
VU ended up dominating Martin even more than the final 16-2 score might indicate. It was over early, and virtually every VU position player got game action.
But just three hours prior to game time, the VU coaching staff received a phone call that would put a pall over the evening. VU head coach Tim Corbin was informed that pitching recruit Stephan Gant, of Parsons, TN Riverside High, took his own life earlier in the day.
Parsons was scheduled to begin summer school at Vanderbilt next month.
