Vandy hangs on to top MSU in Nashville
NASHVILLE, Tenn.-Vanderbilt nearly blew a 14-point lead with under four minutes to play, but Mississippi State missed a 3-pointer on the game's final possession as the Commodores defeated the Bulldogs 75-72 at Memorial Gym in Nashville on Wednesday evening.
Freshman John Jenkins hit a pair of foul shots with 6.8 seconds left to give VU a three-point lead, then the Commodores dodged Dee Bost's 3-point attempt in the closing seconds to hang on for a win.
Vandy also dodged near triple-double by MSU's Jarvis Varnado, who tallied 12 points, 14 rebounds and nine blocks.
Fortunately for the Commodores, 3-point defense-which had been an Achilles' Heel in league play-may have been the difference, as VU held State to 26.5 percent (9-of-34) behind the arc.
Four Commodores-Jermaine Beal (17 points) A.J. Ogilvy (16), Jenkins (12) and Brad Tinsley (11) scored in double-figures, as VU ran its record to 17-4 overall and 6-1 in the Southeastern Conference before a crowd of 14,316.
