State of Recruiting- XU's Ohio Targets

The Xavier coaching staff has made it a point to focus in on grabbing the top talent from Ohio in the next couple of recruiting classes. The state has plenty of talent to choose from and XU is in on all the elite talent. Here is a look at both the priority recruits and the radar guys that Xavier is actively pursuing.

Priority Recruits:

Devin Williams- 6'8 PF Cincinnati Withrow 2013: As mentioned in our last recruiting article Williams is XU's top priority big man recruit. Williams, a four-star prospect, has gathered offers from over 20 high majors and lists XU consistently with his top schools. A powerful low post scorer, and high level rebounder, Devin plays with great heart and has shown a strong work ethic noticeable through his vast improvement. Now capable of shooting the ball past 15 feet, facing up and attacking off multiple dribbles, and with improved explosion to dunk the ball in traffic he is quickly becoming one of the Midwest's top prospects.

Tony Farmer- 6'7 SF Garfield Heights 2013: Also mentioned before Farmer is a guy that Xavier coaches have been all over. Farmer is a passionate inside-outside forward who has a college ready body and elite athleticism. He is still in developmental stages with his skills but he has the potential to be a point forward which combined with his overpowering strength and bounce would make him a near five-star prospect (he's currently a four-star with offers from several high majors).

Maverick Morgan- 6'10 C Springboro 2013: Very skilled and surprisingly athletic for his size Morgan has really seen his stock go up this fall. Xavier coaches went to watch him work out several times, and plan on seeing him play Friday 12/9 at his high school. Morgan is not only tall but has a wide frame with room to add more muscle and good length. His jump hook over his left shoulder is deadly and he shows nice touch around the rim. Currently West Virginia and Xavier are recruiting him the hardest with other high majors like Cincinnati and Wisconsin involved as well.

Vincent Edwards- 6'7 SF Middletown 2014: A talented prospect that has recently visited Xavier, Vince is a player XU wants to get in on early as he is about to blow up! A versatile threat that can play the 1-4 spots offensively and guard 1-5 in high school Edwards has the complete skill set as a ballhandler, passer, scorer, and shooter with a 6'7, and possibly rising, frame. A good athlete who impacts the game with effort plays Edwards numbers of 18 points, 17 rebounds, and 6 assists on opening night show that as a sophomore he is a priority high major recruit. Dayton, Purdue, Wisconsin, Cincinnati, and Indiana are all in on him early as well.

Radar Prospects: Players that the Xavier coaching staff is actively recruiting but has yet to offer as they are still evaluating their progress.

Nigel Hayes- 6'7 PF Toledo Whitmer 2013: Athletic and powerful forward that doesn't have a true position. Has the ability to be a Travis Taylor (little bulkier, not quite the athlete) like player collegiately. Xavier, Cincinnati, Dayton, and the MAC schools are presently recruiting him the hardest; although the three star prospect might go the football route instead.

Mark Williams- 6'7 PF Cleveland Benedictine 2013: Hard working and super skilled forward with a full frame Williams has terrific touch and footwork around the rim while being able to shoot out to 17 feet with ease. A good rebounder for his size with decent bounce around the rim he will become a priority recruit if he can add another inch or two. Indiana has reportedly offered as have several mid-majors with Xavier, Cincinnati, Michigan, and several others actively recruiting him.

Jack Gibbs- 5'11 PG Westerville North 2013: Someone that Xavier coaches are monitoring and probably would offer if he either was taller or if he fit more of a need. Gibbs is undersized but he is a flat out winner at the highest level with great charisma and true toughness. A pure point man who can shoot the ball out to NBA range or score at the rim with good strength Gibbs has offers from approx. 15 mid-majors, most notably St. Joe's, and will garner more attention this season.

Josh Davenport- 6'5 SG Cincinnati Moeller 2013: Super talented wing prospect that after a so-so July AAU run is starting to come into his own. High level athlete with a natural knack for scoring off the bounce Josh has a nice mid-range game with good touch on his jumper. He needs to add strength and continue to develop but his potential is vast and Xavier coaches know it. His brother Mike Davenport was a late bloomer and has gone to have a great career at St. Bonaventure making it unlikely that high majors let him get out the area like Mike did. Josh lists Dayton, Butler, Wisconsin, Xavier, Cincinnati, Iowa, and Duquesne as schools recruiting him the hardest.

Monty Boykins- 6'4 SG Lakota West 2013: Pure shooting guard that can score at a high level and is rapidly improving. Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Cincinnati, and Penn State have recently turned the heat up on Boykins and Xavier is starting to follow suit. Monty has really started to fill out his frame and his leaping ability has improved, making him much more of a multi-dimensional scoring guard. He possesses excellent passing skills as well and if he can improve as a defender he should end up as a high major.

Kevin Johnson- 6'2 PG Cincinnati Summit 2013: Very talented combo guard that excels as a scorer and an athlete, Kevin has visited Xavier recently and is being recruited by Seton Hall, St. Joe's, Cornell, Cincinnati, Dayton, Davidson, Wake Forest, and several others. He is deadly on the isolation as he has elite quickness and can create a shot for himself any time he wants, where he shows nice touch from mid-range off the dribble. The Rivals 150 guard is an interesting prospect as he is neither a true PG or SG but is someone with high level talent that Xavier will absolutely recruit.

Roderick Mills: 6'7 SF/PF Cincinnati St. Xavier 2014: As we reported earlier this week, Rod is very much in the developmental stages as a high post scorer with great length and potential. Xavier was the first school on him and monitors him closely. Mills will have a chance to breakout as the AAU season approaches and Xavier will re-evaluate him at that point more than likely.

Luke Kennard- 6'5 SG Franklin 2015: It might be early but Kennard can flat out play! A skilled off guard that can play the point Luke has a nice lefty jumper and excels as a slashing playmaker. A good athlete at his size for his age Kennard is already getting recruited by Xavier, Cincinnati, Michigan (where he has visited), and Ohio State. One of the top players in the country that Musketeer fans will be hearing about for a long time, and who lives less then 30 miles from campus.

Amos "AJ" Harris- 5'10 PG Dayton Dunbar 2015: Another guy that XU wants to get on early as he has been consistently ranked among the top five PG's nationally in his class by every recruiting service since he was in the 6th grade. AJ is being recruited by Xavier, Dayton (offer), Michigan, Ohio State, and other high majors as his abilities to run the show and find teammates, or score the ball with a variety of floater shots, is developed way beyond his years. Only thing that could potentially hold him back is his size but Harris is so talented it might not be an issue even if he doesn't grow another inch.
