The Carolina game in a nutshell

Vanderbilt dropped a heart-breaking 17-13 decision to South Carolina in its season opener. VandySports.com's Chris Lee and Jesse Johnson tell you how it happened -- in a nutshell.

Turning point:
Vandy led 13-10 early in the fourth quarter. South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw was playing hurt and the Gamecocks had nothing offensively except for Shaw and Marcus Lattimore running the ball. The Gamecocks threw the ball just 14 times the whole evening, but with a second-and-1 from the Carolina 48, Shaw saw tight end Justice Cunningham open for a fleeting second.

The ball arrived just as Vandy's Andre Hal did. Hal belted Cunningham into tomorrow, but Cunningham did a remarkable job of holding on for a 20-yard gain and Hal was subsequently whistled for a personal foul on the hit. That moved the ball to the VU 17.
