Friday's baseball notebook
Vanderbilt opened a three-game inter-squad series on Thursday night, with the Gold team knocking off the Black squad by an 8-7 score in 11 innings. VandySports.com's Chris Lee was there, and had these observations.
Top-ranked freshman class looks as good as advertised
Last year, the Commodores had the top-ranked freshman class in the land, but the bunch didn't play up to the hype for much of the season, and certainly not in fall ball.
This year, Vanderbilt also landed the nation's top freshman class, and after Thursday night's scrimmage, the early verdict is this: at this stage of the game, it's not even close between this year's freshmen and last season's. This group has players who'll help the Commodores immediately, especially in the lineup.
The player everyone left Hawkins Field buzzing about was shortstop Dansby Swanson. The 6-foot, 175-pound Swanson has been generating a lot of buzz with his fall practices, and on Thursday night, the Marietta (Ga.) native looked every bit like the real deal.
