Looking back to Carolina, ahead to UMass

Coach James Franklin and players Walker May and Austyn Carta-Samuels attended Monday's Vanderbilt football press conference. Here are some thoughts and notes coming out of today's conference.

Looking back to South Carolina

Saturday's 35-25 loss to Carolina was largely not a good night. The Commodores fell in a 28-0 hole early in the second quarter, and were out-gained by a 579-268 margin. On Monday, coach James Franklin didn't necessarily duck the poor play, but he did find a way to accentuate the positives.

In spite of a dreadful first 25 minutes, Vanderbilt (1-2) made things interesting late into the fourth quarter. Things started with Steven Clarke's 69-yard interception return to the 1 that set up Jerron Seymour's 1-yard scoring run. Franklin lamented the fact that it didn't come earlier.

"We need more of these kinds of big plays this year. I'd make the argument that if Steven makes that play earlier in the game, the whole game would look different," he said.
