Tuesday notebook: Things will get easier for the defense

It's not me, it's you

Under defensive coordinator Bob Shoop, it had been hard to argue with the results as the Commodores finished in the top 25 of the NCAA's total defense rankings the last two seasons. But this year, Shoop has come under fire after the Commodores have been blistered in four games this season.

Those four games were Ole Miss, South Carolina, Missouri and Texas A&M, which averaged over 45 points and 537 yards against the Commodores. But as Shoop said last week, given the era in which the offense has the upper hand over the defenses, you almost have to re-think what makes a good defensive performance any more.

Granted, nobody's arguing that the Commodores were good defensively in any of those four games. However, when you note that those teams average 38.6 points and 506 yards each time out, it certainly puts the struggles into perspective.
