Coney looking forward to fresh start
Bennie Coney, from Plant City high school, didn't have the junior season that he had hoped for. It wasn't for his on-the-field play, which he felt was going great, but rather his off-the-field issues that he wasn't proud of.There is a negative shadow casting over one of the brightest stars in the state of Florida. 2012 quarterback
"I was suspended twice during my junior year and I am not happy about it. I spent the last few months trying to make changes in my life. I am really trying to work on my attitude. I need to make some changes because I don't want that to mess up my opportunities. I am taking some classes that will really help that. I look forward to proving everyone wrong and working hard to fix things. I have spoken to my coaches and my teammates and they are behind me. I am looking forward to a fresh start."
Coney, currently 6-foot-2 and 205 lb's, is one of the top quarterback prospects in the state of Florida and has plenty of offers to show for it.
"I have been offered by Auburn, Florida State, Michigan, South Florida, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest. I have a few other offers, but those stand out. I visited Miami, Florida State, USF, and Auburn this year. I have made plans to get to Virginia Tech, USF, and FSU in the next few months. I would definitely like to hear more from Notre Dame and a few Texas schools in the near future."
With all the top programs that have offered Coney, there is one school that stands out above the rest.
"Florida State is my leader right now. The school and facilities are great and Coach Jimbo is a terrific coach. He has done some good things with that program. I went to the Wake Forest game last year and FSU won 31-0. That was fun. I want to go somewhere with great facilities and cool coaches. Somewhere that feels like home and has good academics. FSU has all that."
Coney has a new, positive attitude on life and is really looking forward to a big senior season, but will he still be at Plant City?
"I know there are a lot of rumors out there about me transferring, but I am staying at Plant City. I want to stick it out with my teammates. We want to win a state championship and get that ring. You know, I was watching Roethlisberger this weekend and he might get another ring and that's what I want. I model my game after him. I move well around the pocket, keep my eyes down field, and beat people with my arm and athleticism."
In limited action this season, Coney finished with 1,500 total yards and 17 touchdowns. He will be attending the FSU Junior Day on February 19th, 2011.
