Vanderbilt downs Alabama A&M

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore Kedren Johnson and junior Rod Odom combined for 36 points as Vanderbilt defeated Alabama A&M 71-46 inside Memorial Gym on Saturday. The victory moved the Commodores back to .500 on the season at 4-4.

Johnson led the way with 19 points, sinking 6-of-8 from the free throw line and draining three three-pointers. Odom shot 55-percent from the field, converting on 4-of-6 attempts from behind the arc as well.

The Commodores shot 51-percent from the field, including 10-of-21 from behind the three-point line. The Dores also out-rebounded the Bulldogs 38-29 despite trailing in that stat to start the game.

Vanderbilt never trailed in the game, and begin to establish a commanding lead late in the first half, courtesy of a 13-7 run in the period's final six minutes. Vanderbilt led 31-22 at the break.

The Commodores used the first 10 minutes of the second half to extend the lead, stretching it out to as much as 17 points following Josh Henderson's jumper at the 10:41 mark. Everything was all but over at that moment aside from the game's final score.

Henderson finished with a career-high 13 points in the victory. His previous high was 10 points in Vanderbilt's win over Monmouth last season.

True freshmen Kevin Bright and Shelton Jeter added moments of encouraging play, as Bright finished with a team-high eight rebounds as well as five points. Jeter also scored five points with six rebounds and a block.

Vanderbilt will return to action on Monday when Cornell comes to Nashville for a 8 pm CT tip inside Memorial Gym. The Ivy League squad currently sit at 4-5 on the season.
