Defense helps Vandy win at Carolina

Vanderbilt got just three points from leading scorer Kedren Johnson, but led most of the game and withstood a South Carolina rally at the end, defeating the Gamecocks in Columbia by a 58-51 score for its first Southeastern Conference win.

VU had a 10-point lead with 8:35 to play, which Carolina eventually cut to two until the 1:16 mark, when Rod Odom drained a pair of free throws to put Vandy up, 53-49. The Commodores were erratic at the free throw line from that point on, hitting just 5-of-10 from there on, but the defense - which held USC to 23.7 percent shooting on the day - was good enough to slam the door on the Gamecocks.

Kyle Fuller (12 points) and Dai-Jon Parker (11) led the Commodores (7-9, 1-3 SEC) in scoring.

Vanderbilt led 24-19 at the half, despite 10 turnovers, because it held Carolina to 17.2 percent shooting (5-of-29) from the field. Seven Commodores scored in the first half, led by Sheldon Jeter with six, and VU led by as much as eight at one point.
