Vanderbilt women fall to Kentucky
Vanderbilt fell to 10th-ranked Kentucky at Memorial Gymnasium on Sunday. Garrison Boyd has all the key details.
Vanderbilt came out trying to make a statement early in the game on the offensive side of the ball. It got the ball into the paint quickly on some good post ups, and swung the ball around good in transition. On defense, it struggled containing Kentucky's mix of size on the boards, and shooting from the outside. The more the first half continued, the more the Commodores got their defense clicking.
The big difference maker in the first half was the turnover problems in the first half for Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt really had a chance to either be in the lead or be very close to it. The turnovers though, were really crippling in the first half.
At the end of the half, the Commodores trailed the Wildcats by a score of 31-22.
Vanderbilt came out in the second half trying to get the ball in the paint, and had good success doing it. However, while Vanderbilt had success, so did Kentucky. Vanderbilt could not find an answer on defense in the paint, or in transition. The main reasons for the Commodores not being able to stop Kentucky on defense were still due to the massive amounts of turnovers by Vanderbilt.
Vanderbilt continuously had no success cutting down on turnovers. It ultimately led to not only a downfall on offense but sucked whatever life was left out of the Commodores' defense. The Commodores got down, and got down quickly. The sad truth was that once they got down, the Commodores could not find an answer to get back up, as Vanderbilt fell to the 10-ranked Wildcats by a score of 75-53.
The turning point in the game was Vanderbilt never changing the momentum to its favor in the game. Vanderbilt continued to let Kentucky play its style of basketball throughout the game, played sub-par defense, and continuously turned the ball over.
What you need to know
There is not a lot to be said about the game other than Vanderbilt was pretty outmatched in this contest. Vanderbilt could not get a stop on defense, and turned it over often on offense. Long-term speaking, the Commodore nation will wait anxiously to her how Christina Foggie is, as she went down late in the second half.
