Vanderbilt releases non-conference hoops slate
Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings has announced his team's 2013-14 non-conference schedule, a slate that is highlighted by a trip to the Virgin Islands for the 2013 ezybonds Paradise Jam and home games against ACC foe Georgia Tech and 2013 NCAA participant St. Louis.
"We're excited about our non-conference schedule this year," said Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings. "We have a wide variety of excellent teams that come from very good conferences that have both tradition and recent success. Our players are excited for the challenge, and we hope our fans are too."
The Commodores begin their regular season on a busy note with three games in the first eight days of the campaign, with the team opening November 12 against Georgia State. A home game with Lipscomb follows on November 15, and then Vanderbilt heads to Butler for a return game of a home-and-home series on November 19. The Bulldogs knocked off the Commodores last season at Memorial Gym.
Vanderbilt heads to the Virgin Islands for a game against Providence on November 22 in the ezybonds Paradise Jam, and then faces either Morgan State or LaSalle in the second round on either November 23 (loss vs. Providence) or November 24 (win). The final game of the tournament is November 25 against either Northern Iowa, Loyola Marymount, Marist, or Maryland, with all games being televised by the CBS Sports Network.
After the return trip home from the Virgin Islands, Vanderbilt travels to Austin, Texas, to take on Texas in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. The game will tip at 8 p.m. CT and be televised on ESPN2.
The last five games of the non-conference schedule will all take place at Memorial Gym. Those games include a game with Marshall on December 5, Austin Peay on December 17, ACC foe Georgia Tech on December 21 (3 p.m., FSN), 2013 NCAA participant St. Louis on December 30 (8 p.m., ESPNU), and 2013 NIT participant Northeastern on January 4.
"Our home non-conference schedule, coupled with the SEC games at Memorial, is one of the best home schedules we've had since I've been here," said Stallings.
In all, Vanderbilt could play as many as six teams that made the NCAA Tournament (Butler, LaSalle, St. Louis) or NIT (Providence, Maryland, Northeastern) in their non-conference schedule.
The Commodores will play one exhibition game, with a date still to be determined.
