Sluggish Vanderbilt outlasts UMass in Foxboro

It took a while to get going, but sluggish Vanderbilt scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to stave of an upset bid from Massachusetts, as the Commodores went on the road to get a 24-7 win in Foxboro, Mass., on Saturday afternoon.

Quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels tossed a pair of touchdowns, one to Jordan Matthews and another to Jonathan Krause.

Vanderbilt opened the scoring when Carta-Samuels hit Krause with a 42-yard bomb with 4:34 left in the first quarter.

But UMass tied it when A.J. Doyle hit Tajae Sharp with a 4-yard scoring strike on the next drive. It came with 13:11 left in the first half.

Carey Spear hit a 32-yard field goal with 1:55 left in the half to put VU back on top.

Early in the fourth quarter, with VU at the 11, UMass had Carta-Samuels trapped in the backfield, but he managed to flip a pass to Matthews, who sprinted across the field, leaped over a defender, and extended the lead to 10.

A 1-yard scoring run by Jerron Seymour extended the lead to 24-7 after Spear's point-after.
