Notes from James Franklin's Monday press conference

After VU's historic 34-17 win over Florida, coach James Franklin held his usual Monday press conference. Here are some quick notes as to what Franklin said.

  • Winning the turnover and penalty battle vs. Florida "was what the game came down to." Even on some VU penalties, they were purposeful, delay-of-game infractions.

  • Didn't meet explosive play goal, but was happy with VU's ability to string short gains into longer drives. "They've very important in the SEC, a line-of-scrimmage league."

  • The defense did meet goal of explosive plays. Goal is three, UF had just one.

  • They've shown they can handle adversity, now, they have to show they can handle success. He's been very pleased with the team's preparation and perseverance.

  • Holding UF to 1.1 yards per rush was huge.

  • Offensive Players of the Week: RB Jerron Seymour and C Joe Townsend

  • DE Caleb Azubike and S Kenny Ladler were the Defensive Players of the Week. Azubike was the SEC's Defensive Lineman of the Week.

  • P Taylor Hudson won the special teams honor. Hudson kept UF's return men from being factors, that had been a concern

  • VU was 6-for-6 in red zone scoring.

  • Defense had four turnovers, five sacks and nine stops for loss.

  • Key players who didn't play on Saturday due to injuries: starting RT Andrew Bridges, staring QB Austyn Carta-Samuels, backup QB Josh Grady, backup OL Barrett Gouger, starting WR Jonathan Krause backup TE Steven Scheu, backup WR Latevius Rayford. Starting TE Kris Kentera and starting LB Chase Garnham played, but left with injuries. Backup RB Wesley Tate had just one play, that being on UF's onside kick attempt, which he successfully fielded.

  • Kentucky returns 13-of-22 starters

  • VU has advantage in turnovers, penalties vs. UK

  • UK primarily runs a 4-3 with a base cover-4, but will show 3-4 looks. Defensive line is big.

  • UK LB Avery Johnson and DE Alvin Dupree catch his eye on defense.

  • A sellout is very important and is the "next step for the program." The other thing he mentioned was facilities improvements -- they've made "tremendous strides" but still have "a long ways to go." Mentioned the stadium "as a big part of that."

  • Emphasized consistency in approach and fundamentals as reasons they continue to win.

  • One of the best things about RB Jerron Seymour is his ability to minimize the negative runs. He liked the way Kimbrow played last week.

  • They hope to get Tate healthier and more involved.

  • He was asked about bowl goals and as always, he emphasized the game in front of them.

  • DE Caleb Azubike was a raw, inexperienced athlete who was a soccer player, and he praised DL coach Sean Spencer's ability to help develop him.

  • The first two years, they played some guys they'd have preferred to redshirt.

  • Says their depth is better than when they first got here "but have a long ways to go."

  • "Every single week, we try to out-do the preparation from the week before."
