Jones's great debut leads VU past Georgia State
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Vanderbilt's Damian Jones had 19 points and seven rebounds in his collegiate debut and hit key shots down the stretch, as the Commodores beat Georgia State by an 86-80 score at Memorial Gym on Tuesday night's season opener.
With the game tied at 73, Jones hit about a 10-foot jumper with just under two minutes to play, giving the Commodores a lead that would hold the rest of the way. He later added a fast-break dunk to push the lead to six, and the Panthers never got closer than four from there.
VU got 19 from Rod Odom, who was 5-of-9 from the field, and 18 more from Tulsa transfer Eric McClellan, who made his VU debut. The Commodores were 10-of-21 behind the 3-point line but was out-rebounded by the smaller Panthers by a 34-30 count.
Kentucky transfer Ryan Harrow had a game-high 27 points on 21 shots, and R.J. Hunter, the son of Georgia State coach Ron Hunter, added 21.
The Commodores (1-0) led 35-34 at half. Next, they'll play Lipscomb in Memorial Gym on Friday night.
