2018 Introduction: Brentwood's Bryce Merrell

During each season, a prospect emerges out of nowhere to become one of the top prospects in the area. One prospect to watch this fall is Brentwood safety Bryce Merrell. The 6-foot-1 and 195-pound safety had a good summer camp circuit.

“This summer, I went to an Austin Peay camp where I was one of the defensive back MVPs. I had a good performance at the Music City Showcase, and I wasn't able to finish my camp at Vanderbilt,” said Merrell.

“The recruiting process is going pretty well. Besides Vanderbilt, I've been in contact with Purdue, Tennessee, and Harvard. Education is a big one for me. I want to have the skills necessary to have success not only on the field but also off of it.”

In addition to safety, Merrell also excels at the wide receiver position. He projects to be a safety at the next level.

“My strengths are using my size and weight to my advantage to create space as an offensive player. On defense, I like using my footwork to put me in a position to make a play on the ball,” said Merrell.

“During the offseason, I worked extensively on safety and the footwork required to play that position.”

The 2018 safety likes to compares his playing style to a current NFL safety from the state of Tennessee.

“I really like the physicality that Harrison Smith has, and I try to bring that same style of play to my team,” said Merrell.

Brentwood High School went 6-6 in 2015, and the Bruins hope to improve that record in 2016. They open the season in less than a month against the defending 5A state champions Independence.

“Our goal this year is to be the toughest team on the field. We have a hard working group of athletes that have learned from a great coaching staff. We expect to have many successes and an exciting season,” said Merrell.
