The biggest domino to fall in Vanderbilt's offseason fell on Monday, certainly not the way the Commodores would have hoped, though.
Vanderbilt wing Jordan Wright has entered the transfer portal.
The veteran forward averaged 10.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 39.8% from the field in 2022-23. That was Wright's second-straight season averaging double digits.
Wright was referred to by Vanderbilt coach Jerry Stackhouse as Vanderbilt's "swiss-army knife" and Vanderbilt's "toughest player" for his versatility and his ability to contribute on the defensive end.
Wright hit a slump in February but bounced back with his best performance of the season in Vanderbilt's win at Rupp Arena. It was Wright's first win at Kentucky and one that Stackhouse wanted him to be a part of.
"We started in this thing together, this was my very first recruit, the first guy I signed at Vanderbilt so I get a little bit emotional with this one (Wright) right here, this is what it's about," Stackhouse said with tears in his eyes.
When Wright thinks back on his Vanderbilt career, he thinks of the people around that surrounded him
"just playing with my brothers, the love that I have for these guys and this whole coaching staff. I came here and coach hadn't even finished filling out his staff yet so I was here before a lot of people that are here today, just watching the program change,"
"My freshman year I didn't win a game in January and in the month of February and March (of 2022-23) I haven't lost yet, so it just shows how things can turn around and the job that coach Stackhouse is doing, I'm just proud to be a part of it," the veteran forward said after Vanderbilt's senior-day win over Mississippi State.
It felt like Wright was the piece that may get Vanderbilt over the edge and into the NCAA Tournament in 2023-24, now the Commodores' staff will have to make up for Wright's contributions elsewhere.
Is that through the transfer portal? Do Vanderbilt's younger wings now have to step into bigger roles? Whether Vanderbilt can fill the hole that Wright will leave is yet to be seen, but it's clear that the hole is certainly significant.
