Vandy tops Oregon in opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn.-Vanderbilt's John Jenkins scored 24 points and Jeffery Taylor had 21, as the No. 7 Commodores withstood a second-half rally by Oregon to get a 78-64 victory at Memorial Gymnasium in the season opener for both teams.
A sellout crowd watched VU put together an 18-0 run between the end of the first half and the start of the second half to put space between them and the Ducks. The 'Dores built the lead to 18 midway through the second half, but Oregon's Brett Kingma hit a long jumper from the right corner to cut the lead to 62-57.

Taylor, though, took over from there with a put-back of his own miss on Vandy's next possession.
Moments later, Taylor got a steal, found a streaking Rod Odom on the other end of the floor, which led to Odom hitting the first of two free throws. Odom missed the second, Taylor rebounded, and Jenkins hit a 3 at the 3:31 mark to put the lead back to 10.
The Commodores led 35-29 at half, despite the fact that Oregon out-shot VU 52.4 percent to 34.3 percent.
Oregon native Brad Tinsley added 13 for the 'Dores.
Next, Vanderbilt plays Cleveland State at 1 on Saturday in Memorial Gym.
