Shelby released a statement on Instagram.

"I want to thank God for giving me the opportunity to pay basketball at the collegiate level. I want to thank Vanderbilt University and the Vanderbilt community for supporting me this year. I would also like to thank my teammates for their leadership, encouragement, and support. We will always be brothers. With that being said, I will be entering my name into the transfer portal. I'm excited to see what the future holds."

The class of 2022 guard was ranked as a four-star, top 100 recruit by Rivals coming out of high school.

Shelby averaged 3.7 points per game while shooting 31.4% from the field and 31.1% from 3-point range in his freshman season. The freshman guard hadn't appeared in a game since Vanderbilt's February-14th win over South Carolina.

The 6-foot-3 guard was part of Vanderbilt's highly-touted 2022 class that is now down to just Colin Smith, Lee Dort (who was Shelby's high-school teammate) and Paul Lewis.

Shelby is regarded as one of the best shotmakers in the class but will have improve his shot selection and develop more as a creator as well as a defender to hit his ceiling. With the backcourt depth that Vanderbilt looks to have next season, there may not have been room for Shelby to play significant minutes.

The departure of Shelby gives Vanderbilt its second open scholarship as it looks to add through the portal.
