Matt Ryan spent the first two years of his college experience wearing Notre Dame gold. After he wears a red shirt next season, Ryan will wear the black and gold of the Vanderbilt Commodores for the next two campaigns.
Ryan announced Tuesday that he would be transferring to Vanderbilt.
Bryce Drew and his staff were not surprised about Ryan’s declaration. His visit two weekends ago went favorably. Despite Cal, and very recently Georgetown and George Washington being in the picture, there was quite a bit of optimism around the West End that Ryan would come aboard.
The sophomore from New Rochelle, N.Y. is known as a deadly catch-and-shoot threat from deep. In his two seasons at Notre Dame, he attempted 243 shots, with 206 coming from behind the 3-point line. He averaged 4.4 points per game for his career, and shot 38.9 percent from 3.
Jeff Roberson has one more season in uniform, and with Clevon Brown being the only other player at the power forward spot, the 6-foot-8 Ryan has an excellent shot to step right onto the floor in the 2018-19 season and play the stretch four position.
The perimeter in two seasons should also compliment Ryan’s outside shooting game. With the arrival of Saben Lee, Larry Austin Jr, and Maxwell Evans in this 2017 class, the athleticism will have a vast upgrade. Joe Toye will also be a senior, and Payton Willis will be a junior in the 2018-19 season.
The ability to drive and kick to a knock down shooter like Ryan should be a huge factor in the Vanderbilt offense of the future.
Stay tuned to VandySports.com, as we will have more this week on Ryan’s commitment. We will be speaking to him by the middle of the week, and will find out why Vanderbilt stood out to him.
