Vanderbilt released its depth chart for the MTSU game on Tuesday, Aug. 29. Below are comments on that depth chart and other things of note that stood out.
OFFENSE
We anxiously awaited to see what VU released along the offensive line. Sure enough, there's been a dramatic overhaul here since the spring.
Justin Skule remains the left tackle, with true freshman Cole Clemens backing him up. Clemens is the only true freshman who appears on the depth chart.
Ean Pfeifer, who ended 2016 as the starter at left guard, has retained that spot. Pfeifer missed some of August practice with an undisclosed injury. Behind him is JUCO transfer Saige Young, who greatly benefitted from increased reps while Pfeifer missed time.
Bruno Reagan is indeed at center, listed as a co-starter with Sean Auwae-McMoore, who ended the spring as the starter here while Reagan was at right guard, where he started last year. We'd be shocked if we didn't see Reagan getting the first snaps, and the majority of them, unless VU is planning to move him back to right guard, which would surprise us, too.
Jared Southers is listed as the starting right guard, ahead of Bailey Granier. Although not a surprise, this may be the most interesting development on the depth chart.
Granier, an interior lineman during his career, had moved to right tackle, where offensive line coach Cameron Norcross loved him. But an undisclosed injury held Granier out much of August.
Southers, in the meantime, was expected to compete for time at either tackle. The injury to Pfeifer got him reps at left guard, where Norcross liked what he saw immediately. Southers was apparently able to make a lasting impression enough to claim a job on the other side.
Meanwhile, Granier would presumably be the sixth man. That's not a bad thing; he's an experienced offensive lineman with experience inside and outside and should be able to fill in quickly if somebody's hurt or if someone needs a breather.
As predicted, Devin Cochran won right tackle. Cochran left spring as the backup left tackle, but he's probably the most talented edge guy on the team. Seeing him start gives the line as a whole a bigger ceiling, though there are probably going to be growing pains. Granier is listed as the backup.
Even though Bailey McElwain left spring as the starting fullback, we didn't expect to see him as the starter due to his being in a walking boot all August when we saw him. On Tuesday, Vanderbilt seemed to confirm what we expected by listing Dallas Rivers as the starting fullback.
That said, McElwain is listed as the second-teamer. We suspect he's on there just to keep MTSU guessing, but we'll see come Saturday.
At one wide receiver spot, C.J. Duncan and Kalija Lipscomb are listed in an "or" situation, with Duncan listed first. Generally, the player to the left of the "or" is the starter, so with Lipscomb exiting the spring as a starter, this comes as a small surprise.
DEFENSE
The only change in the starting 11 from spring is along the defensive line, where experienced senior Jay Woods is now a starter, and Dare Odeyingbo is a second-teamer.
Woods was presumed to be Nifae Lealao's backup in the middle, but defensive line coach C.J. Ah You told us last week that he'd liked some of what he'd seen from Woods outside.
Odeyingbo is now Lealao's backup in the middle and should see time at the edge some. Woods will probably spell in the middle as well.
Josiah Sa'o, a redshirt freshman, won a backup spot along the line. He's listed behind Jonathan Wynn, who's played end. This is a bit of a surprise since Sa'o came to VU expected to play in the middle, but again, Vandy likes to move its defensive linemen around.
The only "or" situation is at free safety, where LaDarius Wiley is listed before Arnold Tarpley. The spring ended in that order without the "or." Tarpley has played a lot of nickel and will see a lot of reps even if he doesn't start.
The only position where there players listed is at one corner. JoeJuan Williams is the starter, followed by Donovan Sheffield and then Taurean Ferguson.
This may be a good development. Ferguson has always been one of the team's more capable back-ups, but Sheffield, a former four-star recruit who hadn't done much in his previous two seasons, saw the field a lot more in August. His development would make this a better unit.
Redshirt freshman Zaire Jones (strong safety), Cameron Tidd (defensive line) and Andre Mintze (outside linebacker) are the other three redshirt freshmen who cracked the depth chart as second-teamers. None are particularly surprises; Kenny Hebert ended the spring where Mintze was, but was hurt all August when we had access.
Coach Derek Mason hinted on Tuesday in his press conference that true freshmen Dayo Odeyingbo and Jalen Pinkney will play, but neither were listed on the depth chart.
SPECIAL TEAMS
There are no real surprises here.
Lipscomb won the punt return job, as expected, where Duncan backs him up.
Tennyson, the team's fastest player, is the top kick returner. Jamauri Wakefield, whom the staff thinks has loads of potential, is the other kickoff returner listed.
