The key to winning championships often starts with the offensive line. Coach Darren Hernandez and the Kapolei Hurricanes of Kapolei, Hawaii have had exactly this.

After the school and JV program started in 2002, Hernandez and his staff had an immediate impact on the Hawaii High School football realm. The team finished with a 6-4 record during the 2015 season behind one of the strongest passing attacks in the state.

Along with one of the strongest passing attacks was the protection delivered by one of the best offensive lines and lineman in Hawaii, Toleafoa Auwae. (He's frequently called "Sean.") The three-star, 6’4”, 296 lb lineman recently committed to the Commodore on Christmas.

VandySports.com recently spoke with Coach Hernandez to get his perspective on what the Commodores would gain from Auwae’s recent commitment to VU.

VandySports.com: What is Sean’s best quality as an offensive lineman?

Coach Darren Hernandez: Sean’s toughness and competitiveness are his best two qualities. He did not give up a single sack this year and it is because of his talent. Along with talent, he also possesses a dogged determination to not get beat.

VS: That is incredible. As an offensive lineman with that type of determination, would you say he has a mean streak about him?

DH: Yes! He has a great ability to turn it on when he’s on the field, but off the field he is a super nice, friendly guy.

VS: What kind of leader is he? Is he a vocal, fiery leader or more of a laid back, I’ll let my playing do the talking type of athlete?

DH: First and foremost, he leads by example. He is a special player to have in the weight room as well. He pushes the guys around him to work harder and is a great leader in all aspects of the game. He can bench press 405…he starts his lift by doing 28 reps of 225 lbs on the bench.

VS: Do you think his development as a leader has benefitted more because of his ability to push everyone in the weight room? Through this, what type of impact has he had on your football team the last few years?

DH: Yes, he works hard at all facets of the game. As far as an impact, he and his brother Viliamu Auwae formed the nucleus of our offensive line which was one of the best in Hawaii.

VS: Coach, what kind of player is Vanderbilt getting with Sean Auwae?

DH: A big, friendly, happy-go-lucky guy off the field…a rugged beast on the field!
