Vanderbilt's Derek Mason has been dismissed from his head coaching position after seven years.
Mason is being replaced after a 41-0 loss to Missouri. Earlier in the fall, Mason's 38-35 loss to Kentucky assured him a seventh losing season in his seven years at Vanderbilt, with an overall career mark of 27-55 and 10-46 in the Southeastern Conference.
The highlights of Mason's career came in the 2016 and 2018 seasons, when the Commodores went to bowls. Mason also presided over a three-game winning streak over Tennessee between 2016-18, the longest for the school in that rivalry since the 1920s.
But things fell apart for Mason the last two seasons. The Commodores went 3-9 in 2019--that included an embarrassing 34-10 loss to UNLV--and are winless this season.
Mason came to Vanderbilt from Stanford, where he served as the defensive coordinator from 2011-13.
Offensive coordinator Todd Fitch will serve as the interim head coach the rest of the season.
