Parker Noland hit two grand slams and drove in 11, RJ Screck hit two home runs and drove in eight, and Vanderbilt hammered Mississippi State in surreal fashion, clubbing the Bulldogs by a 26-3 score in a game called after seven innings due to the Southeastern Conference’s mercy rule.
Enrique Bradfield Jr. added a home run on the first at-bat of the game as Vandy scored three in the first and never looked back.
Noland led Vanderbilt (17-5, 4-0 SEC) with five hits while Schreck had three. Bradfield, Diaz and Screck each had four runs for the Commodores, who faced State for the first time since falling to the Bulldogs in the 2021 College World Series final.
Carter Holton pitched five innings and allowed two runs while striking out five. Jack Anderson pitched the final two innings and allowed one run.
MSU (14-9, 0-4) used six pitchers, including switch-pitching freshman starter Jurrangelo Cijente ( 2 2/3 innings, eight runs, six earned).
Vandy scored seven in each of the third and sixth, three each in the first and fifth, five in the seventh and one in the fourth. The Commodores have now scored 68 runs in their past five games, two of which have been called after seven innings.
Screck followed Bradfield's first-inning home run with a two-run shot that plated Diaz.
After Schreck scored on an error in the fourth, Noland launched what would have been his third home run of the day, but instead lined it hard off the top of the wall in right for a single. That scored Jack Bulger and RJ Austin and made is 6-1.
Noland added grand slams to left in the sixth and seventh. The latter accounted for the game's final runs.
Friday's game was moved to a 4 Central start time due to the possibility of inclement weather. Saturday's second game is scheduled for 2 Central.
