Vanderbilt catcher Stephen Scott broke open a tie game with a three-run home run, leading the Commodores to a 9-2 win over UMass-Lowell at Nashville's Hawkins Field on Sunday afternoon.
Scott had two hits, scored two runs, and led the team with four RBIs. Freshman first baseman Austin Martin and DH Philip Clarke led VU with two hits each, with Clarke adding two walks and Martin, one.
Freshman Tyler Brown (1-0) picked up a win with four innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. Brown struck out six.
Starting pitcher Chandler Day went five innings, gave up two runs, struck out six and walked one. Both runs were earned.
With the score tied at two in the sixth, Scott's three-run blast to right scored J.J. Bleday and Clarke, and put VU ahead for good.
Vanderbilt had 11 hits and walked nine times.
NOTES
Starting first baseman Julian Infante, mired in a 1-for-26 slump, didn't play on Sunday.
Alonzo Jones started in left, with Pat DeMarco in center and Bleday in right.
Jones (triple) had VU's only other extra-base hit.
