Trey Thomas enters the transfer portal

Vanderbilt’s backcourt took another blow on Tuesday morning.

Just a day after Jordan Wright put his name in the portal and Tyrin Lawrence put his in the NBA draft, veteran guard Trey Thomas entered the transfer portal.

Thomas averaged 5.8 points in 23.1 minutes per game during his final season at Vanderbilt.

The veteran guard has two years of eligibility remaining, his departure shifts the focus of Vanderbilt’s backcourt on to its younger guards and potential transfers.

If the season were to start today, Vanderbilt’s backcourt would consist of just three scholarship players in Ezra Manjon, Paul Lewis and Isaiah West. If Tyrin Lawrence opts to return, that would be four.

Thomas is the fifth Vanderbilt player to put his name in the portal and the third guard to do so. A group that looked as if it could be largely similar to the one that nearly made the NCAA Tournament will now have to be primarily constructed through the transfer portal in order to have any chance at competing for a tournament berth.

The Commodores now have four open scholarships.

That leaves an opportunity for Jerry Stackhouse and his staff to infuse the program with needle movers but it also leaves plenty of room for failure with an unsuccessful portal cycle.

The next two months could make or break Vanderbilt's 2023-24 season.
