Gobillot unlikely to play in 2018

Freshman Joe Gobillot was not listed on either the Black or Gold roster in Vanderbilt'’s inter-squad series that started Thursday, and coach Tim Corbin said that he's unlikely to play for VU in 2018.

Gobillot, from St. John’s High School in Houston, Texas, suffered what Corbin termed "a heat illness" this fall, then spent significant time in the hospital.

Gobillot has returned home and is expected to re-enroll for the spring semester, but will likely take a medical redshirt. Vanderbilt has until the week before the season opens in February to make a determination as to whether Gobillot will be on the spring roster.

"The biggest thing is, he's making positive strides," Corbin said of Gobillot's recovery.

Gobillot was ranked as the No. 105 player in the high school Class of 2017. Baseball America ranked him as the No. 276 prospect in the 2017 draft, though he was not selected.

The left-handed pitcher has progressed well enough that he and his family are attending Friday's Black and Gold scrimmage.

It's not the only health concern for the Commodores in fall ball. Right-handed pitcher Justin Wilson isn't on either the Black or Gold roster for the scrimmages.

Corbin said on Thursday that Wilson is out with appendicitis.

Wilson did not pitch for VU last year. The Volunteer State Community College transfer spent last year recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Wilson has yet to throw a pitch in practice for Vanderbilt, but is expected to be on the spring roster.
